Fingerprinting

Above is your unique ID. It was created by gathering information about your device and combining it into a single string. This is called "fingerprinting," and it is very difficult to avoid. Fingerprinting works by taking information about a user's computer hardware, browser information, location, and more. You might think, why should I care if a website can see if I am using an addblocker? This does not reveal much information about me. This is correct. Although each individual data point on its own does not seem to reveal much information about you, when you put all of the information together to create a unique ID like the one above, websites can identify you. They may not know your real identity, but it is an extremely useful way to track your online activity. This is because it is very unlikely that someone else's browser is reporting all of the exact same information as yours. What is even scarier is the fact that even if some of the information collected about you is incorrect, as long as your browser is constantly reporting the same incorrect information, a unique id can still be made and used to track you.

How to stop finterprinting

Because of the way fingerprinting works, it is very difficult to avoid. Say you were to turn off cookies or use a VPN. You might think that you are safe. However, websites can see that you have cookies turned off and are using a VPN. This will be used as a variable in the fingerprinting process, and a unique ID will still be made. In order to effectively stop fingerprinting, you must use a web browser that spoofs personal information or blocks websites from accessing it. The best web browser for this is Tor. The Tor browser makes it very difficult for websites to track you. But it comes with a cost. Due to the way the Tor browser functions, it can be slow to load websites. Because of this, it is best to use a web browser such as Brave. Brave does a great job at blocking fingerprinting, although it isn't as good as Tor. Another way to block fingerprinting is to disable JavaScript. However, this is not recommended as JavaScript is necessary for most websites to function correctly. The sad truth is that other than using the Tor browser, or disabling Javascript, fingerprinting is almost unavoidable.
